In response to recent findings regarding firms not carrying out adequate client due diligence, this article underlines what members should be doing when it comes to money laundering procedures.

Within the news updates in the September issue of ‘economia’, a rather disturbing nugget of information can be found – emboldened in the second paragraph below:

ICAEW’s quality assurance department (QAD) has started to send desk-top reviews to a number of firms. Methods of money laundering These firms have all had a previous QAD visit, and the review focus is to make sure they have done what they said they would do when QAD last visited them, and that they are aware of recent changes in laws, regulations and professional standards.

The first reviews are now complete and the findings are that 48% of firms do not carry out adequate client due diligence to comply with the Money Laundering Regulations 2007.”

48% of firms reviewed do not carry out adequate client due diligence! How can this be? The regulations have been in force in their current form since 2007 and the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) has produced guidance for accounting firms as to what to do to meet their responsibilities.

When questioning why we have to do all this it is important to remember that there is a legal obligation on providers of accounting services to be alert to money laundering.
